Stari Grad ("Old Town") is one of the oldest towns in Europe — founded by Greek colonists from the island of Pharos in 384 BC. The surrounding Stari Grad Plain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an agricultural landscape of stone walls and ancient olive groves virtually unchanged since Greek colonization.

Hvar Town is the glamorous heart of the island — a sun-drenched harbor town known as the "Croatian St. Tropez." It claims to be the sunniest place in Croatia with 2,724 hours of sunshine per year. The town square is one of the largest in Dalmatia.

A chain of 21 small islands just offshore from Hvar Town. Crystal-clear water, hidden coves, and fragrant pine and lavender. The name means "Hell's Islands" (from paklina, the pine resin fishermen used to waterproof their boats), but it's pure paradise.

Hvar's public theatre, built in 1612, is one of the first in all of Europe — it was open to commoners and nobles alike. The Renaissance cathedral sits on the main square, and the Franciscan monastery houses a collection including a 17th-century painting attributed to Matteo Ingoli. Don't miss the hilltop Fortica (Španjola) fortress for panoramic views of the harbor and Pakleni Islands.

The Blue Cave (Modra špilja) is a natural sea cave where sunlight refracts through an underwater opening, flooding the grotto with an ethereal silver-blue glow. The effect is best between 11 AM and noon. Discovered by a Czech baron in 1884 and opened to tourists soon after. Small boats ferry you in — duck low and prepare to be stunned.

Vis was a Yugoslav military base closed to tourists until 1989 — making it one of the best-preserved and least commercialized islands in the Adriatic. The town of Vis sits on the ruins of the ancient Greek colony of Issa (4th century BC). Explore the Roman thermal palace ruins, wander the coastal villages of Komiža, and enjoy some of the freshest seafood in Croatia. The film Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was filmed here.

The crossing from Vis to Korčula takes you across open Adriatic waters with views of multiple islands. Korčula is Croatia's sixth-largest island, densely forested with dark pine and oak — the ancient Greeks called it Korkyra Melaina ("Black Corfu").

Korčula's walled old town is a miniature Dubrovnik — a fortified peninsula with a herringbone street pattern designed to reduce wind while maximizing airflow. Locals fiercely claim it as the birthplace of Marco Polo (born 1254), and you can visit the supposed Marco Polo House and its tower. The Cathedral of St. Mark holds a Tintoretto altarpiece. Walk the walls at sunset for unforgettable views.

Mljet is the most forested island in the Adriatic — 72% covered in dense Mediterranean woodland. Greek legend says Odysseus was shipwrecked here and held captive by the nymph Calypso for seven years. The national park protects the western third of the island.

Two stunning saltwater lakes connected to the sea by a narrow channel. On a tiny island in the middle of Veliko Jezero (Great Lake) sits a 12th-century Benedictine monastery — St. Mary's — one of the most photographed spots in Croatia. Swim in the warm, calm lake water, rent bikes to circle the lakes (~9 km loop), or kayak to the monastery island.

The Elaphiti Islands are a small archipelago just north of Dubrovnik — lush, car-free, and wonderfully quiet. Šipan is the largest, with two sleepy villages, olive groves, and medieval summer palaces built by Dubrovnik's aristocracy. If the ship anchors at Slano instead, it's a picturesque mainland port town on its own beautiful bay.

The final sailing takes you past the Elaphiti archipelago and along the coast toward Dubrovnik. Enjoy the last onboard lunch and a farewell swim in the open Adriatic before arriving at one of the most magnificent walled cities on Earth.

Lord Byron called it "the pearl of the Adriatic." George Bernard Shaw said "those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik." The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 2 km of intact medieval walls, baroque churches, and limestone-paved streets polished to a marble sheen by centuries of foot traffic. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognize it as King's Landing.

The Dubrovnik cable car whisks you 778 meters up to the summit of Mount Srđ in under 4 minutes. At the top: a 360-degree panorama of the old town, Lokrum island, and the Elaphiti Islands you just sailed through. There's a restaurant and bar at the summit — an excellent spot for sunset drinks. The ride down at golden hour is spectacular.

The complete circuit of Dubrovnik's walls is nearly 2 km and takes about 1.5 hours. The walls reach 25 meters high and up to 6 meters thick. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, they were never breached. The walk offers stunning views of terracotta rooftops, the harbor, and the open sea. Go late afternoon when the light is golden and the crowds thin out.
